The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is the primary Norwegian university in engineering and technology. NTNU is in addition a full range university. More than 300 PhD-degrees are awarded yearly, within the fields of technology, science, arts and humanities, social sciences and medicine. January 1, 2016, NTNU merged with three regional university colleges, ranking it as Norway’s largest university with about 38 000 students.


NTNU recognises Arctic Technology as an important theme under the Strategic Research Area under NTNU Oceans (one of four main strategic areas for NTNU as a whole). In this context the university participates in three EU projects within this field, PRICE, and two HYDRALB+ projects (Scaling and production of first-year ice ridges in ice basins and LS-WICE). More than 15 PhDs were awarded in Arctic Technology since 2012. The most relevant current project are Centre for Research based innovation SAMCoT and Centre of Exccelence AMOS. Other projects are RISKAT (Holistic risk-based design for sustainable arctic sea transport), BARENTS 2020 (Arctic field logistics and Trans-Arctic shipping; Development of new business and commercial models for Arctic transportation) and several project within Hydralab IV: A Network Dealing with the Complex Interaction of Water with Environmental Elements, Sediment, Structures and Ice.

NTNU is among the leading Universities World-wide within Arctic Technology. It leads one of the work packages in the Centre for Research based Innovation SAMCoT Arctic Coastal Technology, which Nunataryuk builds directly on, and will continue the SAMCoT effort to provide fundamental understanding as well as rational and practical means for designing, building and running Arctic Coastal Infrastructure. NTNU participates in the national project Norwegian GeoTestSites (2016- 2019) where two test-sites will be established on Svallbard, a strong synergy effect with Nunataryuk is expected.

 

Main tasks in the project

NTNU will co-lead WP6 Coastal infrastructure. NTNU will be responsible for the field site on Svalbard and educate one PhD student. NTNU will also contribute to WP9.
