Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research is one of the world leaders in carrying out Arctic research and strongly involved in observational, modelling and process-based studies with the aim to improve knowledge on the impacts of changing permafrost landscapes in the past, present and future.

AWI hosts the International Coordination Office (ICO) for Polar Prediction that coordinates all international activities related to the area of polar prediction, including the Year of Polar Prediction (YOPP). Moreover, the Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost (GTN-P) is the official monitoring network for permafrost under the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) and is managed by the International Permafrost Association (IPA). The data management component of GTN-P is coordinated at AWI. Next to the Siberian research station Samoylov (Russian- German coordination) in the Lena Delta, AWI runs a coastal observatory on Herschel Island (Canada) and a laboratory complex in Potsdam and Bremerhaven with state-of-the art instruments for 14C AMS dating, stable isotope geochemistry, sedimentology, hydrochemistry and paleoecology. AWI coordinates all German polar research activities.

apecs highresAWI’s strong investment in the training of the next generation of Arctic researchers is among others demonstrated by it hosting the International Directorate Office of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) from February 2017 till January 2022. APECS is an international and interdisciplinary organization for undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, early faculty members, educators and others with interests in Polar Regions and the wider cryosphere with currently about 2350 active members in more than 63 countries. Its aims are to stimulate interdisciplinary and international research collaborations, and develop effective future leaders in polar research, education and outreach.

Main tasks in the project

AWI will be the overall coordinator of the project and work package leader of WP10, which is Coordination, Outreach and Management. In addition, AWI will co-lead WP3 and contribute to the tasks of WP1, WP2, and WP4 and will be involved in all WPs in terms of project management.

APECS will lead the Task 10.4 Training and knowledge transfer within the WP10 and be responsible for coordinating and organizing two interdisciplinary summer schools in Nunataryk.
