Coastal permafrost represents the transition zone between Arctic landmasses and a highly-seasonal and vulnerable coastal ecosystem.
Objectives
WP2 aims to connect these two environments, linking WP1 (terrestrial permafrost) and WP3-WP4 (subsea permafrost and coastal waters), providing information for risk- assessment on erosion and degradation of infrastructure (WP6) and cultural heritage (WPs 7, 9). WP2 will study this transition zone from a microscale perspective (process studies on soil-water interface) as well as from a macroscale perspective (linking terrestrial systems and stocks to coastal ocean systems and stocks) and it will aim to upscale to a circum-arctic perspective.
The specific objectives of this workpackage are:
- O2.1: Quantify coastal erosion retreat rates using high-resolution remotely-sensed products at target regions.
- O2.2: Quantify lateral fluxes of carbon, nutrients and contaminants from coastal erosion and watersheds.
- O2.3: Establish a pan-arctic sediment, carbon and nutrient budget for the nearshore zone.
