nordregioNordregio is a leading Nordic research centre for regional development and planning, established by the Nordic Council of Ministers. We conduct solution-oriented and applied research, addressing current issues from both a research perspective and the viewpoint of policymakers and practitioners. Nordregio’s primary research focus and competence areas include Regional Rural and Demographic Development, Urban Planning and Sustainable Development, Regional Innovation and Green Growth, Governance and Policy, Regional Reforms and Strategies. Operating at the international, national, regional and local levels, Nordregio’s research covers a wide geographic scope, with an emphasis on the Nordic and Baltic Sea Regions, Europe and the Arctic.

Nordregio has worked extensively on projects focusing on development processes that will have major impact on the future of Arctic societies in a mid- to long term time-span. To understand the current state of Arctic affairs, it is of importance to outline the set of pre-conditions, challenges and tendencies that influence contemporary and future issues in the region. Nordregio is experienced in conducting analysis of social and economic development, formal and informal economies, demographic changes, living conditions, the role of access to infrastructure, impact of resource exploitation, changes in settlement structures and the impact of globalisation on the lifestyles and perspectives of the Arctic population. Through circumpolar Arctic collaboration Nordregio has been carrying out research projects with the aim of supporting human development and well-being of Arctic communities while conserving ecosystem structures, functions and resources. In addition to the many Arctic research projects Nordregio also has been part of evaluating and monitoring EU regional development programmes. Nordregio has been involved in a large number of transnational and cross-border cooperation projects and has also a long experience in coordinating large research consortiums, for example within the FP7, ESPON, Interreg and Horizon 2020.
